Lowriding began in the late 1940s in Mexican American neighborhoods across California — East LA, San José, the Mission. Chicano families dropped their suspensions, laid down candy paint and hand pinstriping, and drove slow where everyone else was in a hurry. Each car is customized to its driver and is way of life: craft, engineering, and a refusal to be invisible.
California outlawed lowered cars in 1958 and cruising bans followed in cities up and down the state. Lowriding continued anyway. The ban was finally repealed statewide in 2024. These feats of art and engineering have come to represent creative and subversive adaptability, resistance to conformity, and community. Car clubs have been heavily involved in California's movements for labor and civil rights. The San Francisco Lowrider Council has organized cruises, shows, and community events since 1981. Every car is somebody's decades-long project, often passed down through a family. Treat it that way and it'll treat you well.
